Welcome to the Service and Service Learning Page for the UW DPT Program.

Definition of Service

Service is a noun, “an act of helpful activity; help; aid.” (dictionary.com) In community service, the emphasis is placed on the people being helped and the service being offered. Service can be performed at any time and is commonly associated with volunteering.

American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Definition of Service Learning

Service Learning is a structured learning experience that meets identified needs in the community with:

  • explicit learning objectives
  • preparation
  • reflection

Students engaged in Service Learning are expected not only to provide direct community service, but also to learn about:

  • the content in which the service is provided
  • the connection between the service, their academic coursework, and their roles as citizens

Vision Statement

To provide students with a sustainable program of diverse learning experiences that compliment the academic curriculum and meet the specific identified needs of individuals or communities.
